Your Favourite Snacks – Are You Munching on Cancer-Causing Carbs?

As years pass, evidence of how certain carbohydrates can harm your health keeps mounting. A recent study shows there is even more reason to be motivated to remove those sugars that could trigger cancer cell growth. This particular study shows that unhealthy or “bad” carbs substantially increases prostate cancer risk.

Bad carbs are those processed foods including pizza, packed burgers, and meat sandwiches, as well as sugary beverages like pop and sweetened juices. This new study shows that people who frequently drink sugary beverages are at risk of acquiring cancer three times more than those who do not. Higher intake of junk food doubles the risk of prostate cancer.

In contrast, healthy carbs that come from whole grains, legumes, non-starchy vegetables, and fruits help prevent cancer. Studies show that in particular, breast cancer risk is reduced by about 67%.

What it tells us is that not all carbohydrates are bad for you. In truth, your body requires carbs to fuel it and creates it when tissues and cells convert glucose into energy that can also be used. Critical organs like the brain, kidneys, muscles, and heart, are all fueled by carbohydrates, too.

Bad carbs on the other hand, may flood your body with excessive glucose that would then be stored as fat. It also appears that these bad carbs contribute to creating conditions internally that are quite conducive to cancer cell growth.

This important study started in the 1970s – when the tracking of over 3,000 people since that time showed significant health records that do connect bad carbs with prostate and other kinds of cancers. The kind of food eaten by participants were organized by glycemic load and glycemic index. These are measures of carb quality as related to how they impact one’s blood sugar levels. Results showed that ultimately, those who ate the highest glycemic load foods were more likely to have prostate cancer by an astounding 88%!

Participants in the study who preferred low glycemic index food, including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and legumes, had about 67% lower risk rate for breast cancer. In particular, legumes were associated with cancer prevention showing a 32% reduced risk for breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, too.
