5 Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a very common disease and many people know a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with it. The good news is that there are ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer through lifestyle changes. Below are 5 key considerations when managing your habits, diet and choices.

  1. Stay physically active. Our bodies were created to move, and optimal health requires frequent and consistent physical activity. Incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your routine 3 to 5 times per week.
  2. Maintain a healthy diet. A good guide for healthy eating is to consume food that does not come from a package. In short, plant-based diets are ideal for absorbing essential nutrients that you need each day.
  3. Avoid toxins. In addition to putting good things into your body, it’s important to know what to keep out of the body. Reduce or eliminate substances that tax your immune systems such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol and even sugar. These are all things that weaken the body’s ability to ward off illness. Avoid pesticides by eating organically grown food and minimize use of plastics as much as possible.
  4.  Reduce stress. Be mindful to minimize situations that create stress and anxiety. There is a definite link between contentment and good health, so strive for calming environments as much as possible. Nurture healthy relationships and make time to enjoy activities that bring you joy.
  5. Watch for hormonal imbalance. Studies have indicated that low levels of vitamin D (which is actually a prohormone not a vitamin) may be related to an increased risk for breast cancer. Because we are highly susceptible to Vitamin D deficiency, everyone in Canada and the US should be taking at least some vitamin D3 everyday year-round. Furthermore, it is important to seek a health professional who specializes in evaluating and correcting hormonal imbalance. This is an important consideration in breast cancer prevention. We recommend taking D3 Liquid by Metagenics. Click here to purchase on our website.
