Collagen: How it can help you look and feel younger.

Before and after for skin

What is Collagen?

Collagen is the single most abundant protein in our bodies. It is Greek for ‘glue producer’ and is a complex protein with 19 different amino acids. It is found in animal meat and it is mostly avoided as scraps or waste. Collagen replaces dead skin cells and acts as a ‘glue’ for the skin, tendons and joints.

What does Collagen do?

For starters, it works with the immune system to support joint health. It calms down the immune response and works with the body’s natural repair mechanisms.

It replenishes both ligaments and tendons surrounding the joints and also helps with bone loss due to osteoporosis. People report feeling less stiff and sore along with improvements in the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks.

Collagen decreases joint pain associated with aging and lowers the risk of joint deterioration. Its’ action is anti-inflammatory, making it effective for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritic pain. It is also great for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Ulcers and Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Due to free radical exposure, cell structure weakens, skin gets thin and is easier to sustain damage. Hair gets lifeless, skin sags and wrinkles. Collagen improves hair, skin and nails with no side effects, which is another huge reason for its popularity. We recommend it to our weight loss patients to tighten up areas of skin that tend to sag once the weight comes off.

Collagen (Type IV) in one study was shown to protect the brain against amyloid – beta proteins. By increasing collagen, it combats these proteins that attack neurons (a rich source of collagen in themselves). This could be a significant preventative approach to warding off dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Why Supplement?

As we age, we lose this critical building block and healer. It is estimated that we experience a 25% decrease by age 40. We don’t replenish enough of this element in our diet. Thankfully, collagen supplements are odourless, tasteless and mixes well. It digests easily if you have the right kind. Add to things like smoothies or baking.
