Birth Control Pills – Do Their Cons Outweigh Their Pros?

Most women who are on the birth control pill take it for one of these reasons:

  • To prevent pregnancy
  • To address menstrual cycle related problems
  • To clear up their acne

The most important reason for taking ‘the pill’ is to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Of course, no one can deny its convenience when you look at it that way. Women, however, should first weigh the pros and cons. Do the benefits outweigh the risks or is it the other way around?

Progestin is the artificial hormone found in birth control pills. An Austrian geneticist named Josef Penninger has uncovered a surprising connection between this progestin and a protein in our bodies called RANKL. His research proves that progestin activates RANKL and the effect is the growth of breast cancer cells.

Additionally, the large scale study of Depo Provera done in 2012 supports the idea that women should avoid a hormonal type of birth control pills. The study shows that women between the ages of 20-44 who use Depo Provera double their risk of developing breast cancer too.

These days, many young women and even teenagers experience excruciating pain whenever their period is approaching. The go-to prescribed solution? Take the pill.

But there are a lot of natural alternatives that can address this pain like herbs, supplements, and holistic lifestyle changes. Simple things like drinking filtered water that is free from BPA, adding herbs to your diet, applying local abdominal heat, and doing gentle yoga can help ease your cramps.

There are some young girls who resort to taking the pill in the hopes of curing terrible cases of acne. Of course it is understandable that girls in that sensitive stage would view acne scars as a very serious concern and would want them to fade or disappear. Most of the time, they don’t even check whether a certain kind of medication has adverse effects or not, as long as it is able to deliver what they were promised.

What is not commonly known, though, is that your skin is a reflection of what is actually going on inside your body – like a sneak peek to your overall health. If something is wrong with your skin, chances are, there is an underlying problem waiting to be discovered.

Whatever your reason is for taking the pill, please know that there are a variety of natural solutions that could easily manage your concerns. A consultation with Dr. Sloan can reveal a lot about your health. He can also tailor a natural solution for a lot of health problems.

The pill has been here for a long time, and while it delivers its promise as a birth control method, one must be extra careful and do some research first to see whether it would help more than it would harm.
