Ask everyone you know what their top 3 most dreaded diseases or conditions are, and you are likely to hear Alzheimer’s as one of their answers. In fact, survey shows Alzheimer’s disease is the second most feared disease by aging Canadians. It is also the most common cause of dementia, as it contributes to 64% of all dementia cases. Despite this number, up to this day, conventional medicine has no proven means to reverse or stop it.
Before you worry though, we have some news that could cheer you up!
Some of the best researchers have identified some sort of treatment that could possibly reduce the chance of this once incurable condition by half! Yes, there is now a way to reduce your odds of even acquiring it and it doesn’t come in an expensive pill. Good news, right?
This ‘supplement’ that you most probably want to include in your daily routine now is… exercise! A new study that has just been published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, spearheaded by researchers from major research institutions tracked 876 adults over the last 30 years. They kept detailed records of the type of exercise each participant did, and how much they did it. Additionally, these 876 individuals had undergone a rigorous mental exams to know how their brains function.
Needless to say, the results of the study were just amazing. Evidence showed that there was a substantial increase in the amount of gray matter in the brains of those who performed higher levels of exercise. Those at the highest level of physical activity had the additional benefit of cutting the risk of getting Alzheimer’s by 50%.
Cyrus A. Raji, MD, PhD of UCLA who is the lead author of this study was quoted saying:
“This is the first study in which we have been able to correlate the predictive benefit of different kinds of physical activity with the reduction of Alzheimer’s risk through specific relationships with better brain volume in such a large sample.”
It is true that in times like this, people expect that there would be a magic pill for every ailment there is. But if you ask us, we’d rather spend our money on a new pair of sneakers to battle Alzheimer’s than on some pill that may or may not help our condition and even damage us in some other way.
