It is important for cancer patients to eat a balanced diet that is packed with nutrients that will help them stay strong and energetic. As simple as that might sound, it is not always an easy task. Cancer medications can cause nausea, and radiation treatment, on the other hand, can make the mouth sore. It also affects the taste buds, leading to a loss of appetite.
That is why patients should eat the right foods before, during, and after their treatments. A nutritious diet helps patients maintain a healthy body weight and stamina levels. They will also be able to tolerate the side effects of treatment better and be able to recover from the effects of the treatment faster.
No to Too Many Dietary Restrictions
Cancer treatments often come with side effects such as nausea and taste changes – these might eventually lead to loss of appetite. Thus, it is important that the patients do not have too stringent of food restrictions imposed on them. Serving them their favourite foods, now that is a better strategy. This can be done while avoiding excessive intake of oil, salt and sugar.
A good diet for cancer patients includes a mixture of vegetables and good quality protein. Sugar should be avoided in all of it’s forms. Preferred cooking methods are: boiling, steaming, and stir-frying. Foods that are deep fried, grilled or barbecued should be avoided.
A balanced diet provides the body with the following:
- Proteins – to build tissues, heal wounds, prevent infection, and maintain a healthy immune system
- Carbohydrates and Fats – sources of energy
- Vitamins and Minerals – for proper body functioning and growth
- Water and Fluids – to prevent dehydration
So, what should be included in a cancer patient’s diet?
Vegetables
- Tomatoes, peas, carrots, pumpkin, turnips (for vitamins and fiber)
- Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage (these cruciferous vegetables contain plant chemicals that convert bad estrogen into good estrogen, thus reducing cancer risk as well as the risk of a relapse)
- Asparagus, brussel sprouts (contain rich antioxidants)
- Bitter gourd (lowers blood sugar levels)
- Green leafy vegetables (for iron and calcium)
Fruits
- Oranges (source of Vitamin C)
- Bananas, peaches, kiwis, mangoes, strawberries, pears (for vitamins and fiber)
