Why You Should Think Twice About Taking Antidepressants

If you have been told to take antidepressants because of something you’re going through, you would probably be more than happy to take it, confident that it would solve things. However, despite what we have been told, antidepressants have repeatedly been shown in several long-term studies to actually worsen mental illnesses. That’s not even the end of it.

Antidepressants are also linked to liver damage, weight gain, bleeding, sexual dysfunction, and even reduced cognitive function – quite a lot of adverse effects to deal with, don’t you think? Another secret is the fact that they are also among the top drugs that are most difficult to taper off from, even more so than opiates and alcohol.

Additionally, antidepressants are also known to cause some violent side effects, like suicide and homicide, among many others. Truth is, half of the top 10 most violence-inducing drugs are antidepressants.

What is more alarming is the fact that in the United States, seven percent of all medical visits to primary care doctors are concluded with an antidepressant prescription. Almost three-quarters of those prescriptions are given without a thorough and specific diagnosis. It is also found that most patients who took antidepressants as prescribed never actually met the medical criteria for a conclusive diagnosis of major depression. Even those that were prescribed antidepressants for reasons like panic disorder, OCD, anxiety, and social phobia do not qualify as truly suffering from the said conditions.

How can that happen?

There are some physical conditions that manifest psychiatric symptoms when they aren’t in themselves “psychiatric”. Many times the symptoms of depression are actually caused by hormonal imbalance, blood sugar problems and thyroid dysfunction. Prescribing an antidepressant medication will be ineffective, as it does not treat the real underlying reason for these symptoms. It may appear like we need to address or cure the brain to fix these problems, when in fact, what you need to do is to look at the ecosystem of your body, including hormonal interactions, immune and autoimmune system disorders, toxicant exposure, blood sugar balance, and intestinal health.
