Hay fever is no laughing matter. While some may say that it’s not serious at all, it gets in the way of your daily activities. That’s why most people don’t hesitate to pop a pill at the first sign of hay fever. But instead of immediately reaching out for synthetic medications, why not try some homemade remedies first?
There are a lot of remedies that can easily reduce hay fever and its symptoms, including sneezing, runny nose, itching, coughing, and congestion. There are homemade remedies like herbs and other household ingredients that can act as natural antihistamines.
Here are some herbal recipes that are considered really effective at delivering relief for hayfever:
- Ginger tea with honey can help loosen phlegm and relieve chest congestion. Aside from working as a natural antihistamine, this concoction also makes your immune system stronger.
- Green tea is one of the best natural remedies that can block histamine production and build your immune system as well.
- Chamomile is also an excellent herb to have if you’re suffering from hay fever. You can sip a cup of warm chamomile tea to relieve you of its symptoms. Alternatively, you can smear a bit of chamomile oil with lemon oil on a tissue or handkerchief and try inhaling that.
- Butterbur is an effective herb for relieving sinus congestion, sneezing, headaches, and itchy eyes. It also helps reduce inflammation, as well as block leukotrienes and histamines. Take note, however, that if you are allergic to chrysanthemum or ragweed, butterbur should also be avoided.
Aside from these herbs, there are other old time remedies that have been proven to provide relief from hay fever:
- Omega-3 fatty acids can greatly lower the inflammatory chemicals that are produced by your body when it’s exposed to allergens. A diet that is high in omega-3 acids can then decrease the occurrence of hay fever.
- Steaming can help in breaking up congestion. You can try adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl with hot water. Cover your head with a towel or blanket and carefully inhale the steam. If you are taking homeopathic remedies, however, you should avoid eucalyptus as it can void their action.
- Boil one cup of water with grapefruit and lemon for 15 minutes. Let it cool and add raw honey. Sip it slowly to relieve symptoms of hay fever.
